Welcome to the webpage of Department of Mathematics, Mehsana Urban Institute of Sciences, Ganpat University. The Department of Mathematics was established in 2012 (National Mathematical Year). The department offers post graduate programme (M.Sc.) of two year’s (four semester) as well as dual degree programme (B.Sc. + M.Sc.) of five year’s (ten semesters) in Mathematics. The Five year's Dual Degree programme is divided in to 06(B.Sc.) + 04(M.Sc.) semesters, out of which 1 to 6 semesters cover the curriculum for degree of Bachelor of Science and 04 semesters cover curriculum for degree of Master of Science. After successfully completion of 06 semesters the student can exit from the programme and in this case he/she will be eligible for the degree of Bachelor of Science. If student want to continue his/her study up to 5 year then he/she will be eligible for the degree of Master of Science.
The course curriculum covers different functional areas of Pure Mathematics, Applied mathematics and Applicable Mathematics. There is a vital balance between Algebra, Geometry, Analysis and Computational Mathematics. The course curriculum is compatible within the frame work of Choice Based Credit System (CBCS). The department is center of many Mathematical talent search tests such as Prof. A.R.Rao Mathematics Competitions, Madhava Mathematics Competition, Ramanujan Ganit Spardha and Regional Mathematics Olympiad.
During academic session the department organizes various guest lectures. Mathematicians from other departments of state universities of Gujarat visit the department to deliver lectures on topics pertaining to teaching and research. As a supplement to formal class room teaching the department has instituted a new lecture series entitled “Something Extra” to inculcate Mathematical culture and to train the students for Mathematical exposition.
Scope in Mathematics
Mathematical thinking is important for all members of a modern society as a habit of mind exercise for its use in the workplace, business and finance; and for personal decision-making. Mathematics is fundamental to national prosperity in providing tools for understanding science, engineering, technology and economics. It is essential in public decision-making and for participation in the knowledge economy. One of the benefits of studying Mathematics is the variety of career paths it provides.---> The teaching of Mathematics till Class-12 level as well as Science Colleges and Engineering colleges is a high-demand field and the need is expected to grow in the future.
--> Actuarial science takes Mathematics and Statistics and applies them to finance and insurance. Actuarial science includes a number of interrelating disciplines, including probability and statistics, finance and economics.
--> Computer science is the study of the theoretical foundations of information and computation and their implementation and application in computer systems. Mathematicians, with their training in logical and precise thinking, are highly prized in this field.
--> Operations research is an interdisciplinary branch of Mathematics which uses Mathematical methods to arrive at optimal decisions to problems in maximizing or minimizing things like costs or profits. The eventual intention behind using Operations Research is to elicit a best possible solution to a problem mathematically, which improves or optimizes the performance of the system.
--> Mathematical biology or Biomathematics is an interdisciplinary field of study. It models natural and biological processes using Mathematical techniques and tools. Results have been applied to areas such as cellular neurobiology, epidemic modeling, and population genetics.
--> Cryptography is the practice and study of hiding information. Cryptography is considered to be a branch of both Mathematics and Computer Science. Not just for spies anymore, cryptography applications include the security of ATM cards and computer passwords.
--> Finance is a field that studies and addresses the ways in which individuals, businesses, and organizations raise, allocate, and use monetary resources over time, taking into account the risks entailed in their projects. Mathematicians can build models to help explain and predict the behavior of financial markets.
